Bespoke web design

Bespoke web design, compared honestly with the alternatives

Bespoke website design means a site designed and coded for one business, not a theme with your logo dropped in. This page sets it against the other three ways to get a website, a template agency, a freelancer and a site builder, on the things that decide whether the site earns its keep: speed, conversion, what you own and what it costs over three years. The figures are ours, measured on live client sites, with dates.

Bespoke builds from £6,500. Fixed quote before any work starts.

The definition

What bespoke website design actually means

A bespoke website is designed from research into what your buyers search for, then coded from scratch so every page, component and line of markup exists because your business needs it. Custom web design is the same thing under another name. The opposite is a template: a ready-made design sold to thousands of businesses, with the colours and logo changed and your content dropped into its boxes.

The word gets abused. Plenty of sites are sold as bespoke and built on a template, and the buyer cannot tell from the outside. The test is simple: ask to see the code, ask who owns the domain and hosting, and ask for a live site they built that ranks for a search you can type in. Our web design company in London page shows the six we would show you.

The comparison

Bespoke, template, freelancer or site builder

Six things that decide whether a website pays for itself. The price bands are the ones we publish in our redesign cost guide; the speed and enquiry figures are from our own client sites, measured in 2026.

The honest caveat

When a bespoke website is the wrong spend

If the business is still testing whether anyone wants what it sells, a site builder is the right call: a live page in an afternoon, nothing to own, nothing lost if the idea changes. The same goes for a temporary site, an event, or a budget under £6,500 where the site is not yet how the business gets found.

A bespoke build is for a business that already depends on being found and chosen online, or is about to. Work out what one new customer is worth over a year. If a £6,500 site pays for itself on the fourth enquiry it wins, the question is not the price, it is how soon it starts winning them. The Diagnostic, £750 and credited in full against a build, answers that with your own numbers before you commit.

How a bespoke build runs

Six to eight weeks, research first

The same four steps as every Qyliq web design project, with the weeks fixed in the proposal.

Weeks 1 to 2

Research

Keyword research, a competitor audit and an AI visibility baseline, written into a brief on who your buyers are and what they search for. Nothing is designed until it is agreed.

Weeks 3 to 4

Design

A design system for your brand, then every page planned around one buyer search and one next step. You approve the design before anything is coded.

Weeks 5 to 7

Build

Hand-coded and pre-rendered, images optimised, structured data and the AI discoverability layer wired in. No page builder, no plugins to break, and the code is yours.

Week 8, then 90 days

Launch and measure

A preflight audit including a test enquiry end to end, then 90 days of measurement: speed, rankings, AI citations and the real enquiry count, reported in plain English.

Questions

What people ask
about bespoke web design

The questions people type into Google before they choose between a bespoke build and the alternatives. If yours is not here, call 020 3951 5022.

How much does a bespoke website cost?

In the UK a bespoke website for an established business runs from around £6,500 to £15,000 at an agency, and from £20,000 when it carries revenue directly through ecommerce, portals or a large migration. Qyliq's floors are £6,500 (Growth, around 10 to 20 pages), £9,500 (Authority, rebuilds and multi-audience sites) and £20,000 (Flagship). Every quote is fixed in the proposal before work starts, and the full menu is on the pricing page.

How much does a custom website design cost?

Custom and bespoke mean the same thing: a site designed and coded for one business rather than adapted from a theme. The honest range is £6,500 to £15,000 for a business site, with the price moved by four things: how many pages, whether an existing site has to be migrated with its rankings protected, whether there is custom functionality, and who writes the copy. Design-only quotes are cheaper because the build, the copy and the search work are left out.

How much does it cost to pay someone to build you a website?

There are four routes. A site builder costs little up front and a monthly fee for as long as the site exists, and you never own it. A freelancer is typically £2,000 to £6,000 with the scope varying a great deal. A template agency charges £1,500 to £4,000 for a reskinned theme plus £50 to £300 a month to keep it running. A bespoke build from an agency is £6,500 upwards with hosting at £100 to £600 a year and nothing to rebuild. Over three years the cheapest route is rarely the cheapest.

Can ChatGPT build me a website?

It can write code for one, and the tools built on it can produce a working page in minutes. What they produce is a generic layout with no research behind it, no structured data, no measurement, and no answer to the question of which buyer search each page is for. That is fine for a prototype or a site that only has to exist. It is not what makes a site rank, get cited or turn a visit into an enquiry. Use it to draft; do not use it as the build.

Can I design my own website for free?

Yes. A site builder's free tier or a free theme will give you a live site in an afternoon. The trade-offs are a platform you do not own, shared code you cannot speed up, and a design that was never tested against the searches your buyers make. If the business is at the validation stage that is the right call, and we will say so if you ask. Once the business depends on the site to be found, a bespoke build pays for itself on a handful of enquiries.

How long does a bespoke website take?

Six to eight weeks for most Qyliq builds: two weeks of research, two of design, around three of build, and launch with its preflight audit in week eight. Larger sites with migrations or custom functionality take longer, and the timeline is fixed in the proposal alongside the price.
